The Anime Recap Episode – # 7: February 2018

I don’t know about those reading this, but, I thought February really flew this year. Maybe it was the strong anime lineup that kept me interested or maybe it was because I’m getting old or maybe it was aliens playing mind games on humanity. Whatever the reason, I’ll take it because I hate how long and dreary February normally feels. Though, March hasn’t slowed down and, as I finish this post, I’m surprised to see we’ve almost halfway through the month. If it wasn’t for a very solid month of anime that I’d like to talk about, I might be tempted to forget to post this since it was supposed to go up weeks ago.

Returning to Video Games After 11 Years

A decade ago, I never intended to go so long without playing video games. I had dozens of PS2 games and had spent hundreds if not thousands of hours playing them. My favorite genre was Japanese RPGs and games like Final Fantasy X/X-2, Xenosaga, Dark Cloud 2, and Dragon Quest VIII probably helped my get ready to enjoy anime when I would discover anime during this time period.

Looking back, it was a combination of my burgeoning interest in anime/manga with a poor start to the PS3 that caused the initial break and that was further solidified when I started this anime blog. It also didn’t help that the only video games that seemed to get made and talked about were shooter games which was a genre that I wasn’t interested in. Then, somewhere along the way, the idea of getting back into video games just fell by the wayside.

And that likely would have been how things stayed if two specific wires didn’t get crossed before the most recent Christmas.

The Anime Recap Episode – # 6: January 2018

New year, new season of anime, and a new group of finished series that people will either quickly forget having existed (Juuni Taisen) or will be relieved are finally done (Children of the Whales) so they can finish wasting their time waiting for these series to “get good” or were part of the select few that were good enough people will spend the upcoming months/years hoping for a sequel to be made (Houseki no Kuni). I hope to get to a proper look back at the best anime of 2017 soon; for today, we are focusing on the new anime that began airing for the Winter 2018 season.

Traditionally, the winter and summer seasons are considered the weaker seasons of the year with winter being the weakest overall. Outside of a couple obvious must-watch series it looked like the Winter 2018 season was going to follow the narrative and I would be able to do some catching up on my anime backlog. Then, as it has often occurred in the past, when I started watching the series I thought I would be able to write off, I discovered many of these series could not be so easily dismissed.

I don’t think I’ll find the time this season to tackle my anime backlog and I have the feeling that I still am missing a series from this season I should be watching. So, instead of asking the people reading this to recommend an old show, I’ll be asking which series I should be watching this season. Read on to see which three series the potential pick-ups.

The Null Set’s 10th Year Anniversary

Ten years ago, an anime fan suffering through a period of anime burnout decided the smart thing to do was to start a blog mostly about anime with a bit of science fiction thrown in. And so, with little interest in what was currently airing in that Winter 2008 season, The Null Set was born. Writing about anime helped me work through that burned out feeling and somehow it’s now ten years later and I’m still watching anime and still writing (occasionally) about anime.

Genshiken – A Secret Santa Series Review

My favorite annual anime blog tradition has now come back around in the Secret Santa Project that Reverse Thieves has hosted for almost a decade now. It’s a joy to discover a good series that I would have otherwise been passed over and it’s a joy to discover that the recipient of my picks enjoyed something I picked for them.

So far, my track record in receiving good picks has been very good. Will this year continue the string or did I receive a big lump of coal this year?

Macross – Series Review

The Macross franchise, like many other long running franchises (Lupin, Gundam, Doctor Who, etc.), can intimidate prospective viewers by their size and by the age of their earliest works. Last year’s Macross Δ appeared to be only loosely tied to it’s earlier works and offered new viewers the chance to sample the franchise. I decided to give the series a go and it turned out to be a pretty decent series. The references and the connections to the larger franchise went over my head, but, there was enough for a viewer like me to enjoy. So, with only a little more of a push, I recently decided to start from the beginning with the original Macross series titled Super Dimensional Fortress Macross or just Macross.

I found Macross to be a fascinating series to watch. Fascinating enough that I felt the need to write this review when it’s been about five years since I last wrote a proper series review post outside of my Secret Santa reviews.
