Is it wrong to be more hyped and excited over the Independence Day sequel than the impending Star Wars sequel?
And will all that hype and excitement ultimately hurt my appreciation of Independence Day and help the Star Wars movie when I eventually see it (probably on rent from Netflix or Redbox)?

There’s a running joke in Shirobako about how the director will tell every department involved in making the anime that they are the most important in ensuring that the anime turns out good. They play it for laughs but the director is more right then not; each department and person is needed to give their best or else it will show in the final product somehow. It’s tempting to call the awards here – the Voice, Music, and Animation Awards – the icing on the cake awards, implying the quality of the underlying cake is unaffected by these VMA categories, but that’s just wrong. The easiest way to show this is if one had a magic wand and could change the anime series who will win the awards below with an “average” or even a “poor” level substitute and see how the series would have fared.
Or maybe the ability to jump to alternative world lines would be easier 🙂 .
So, let’s see who’s won this year’s VMA Awards.

Thanks to a personal desire to be as accurate about anime as I can be for this anime blog, I watch series that don’t necessarily interest me and series that I know will probably stink. Sometimes I’m surprised and find that diamond in the rough. Sometimes the anime is as bad as I thought it would be. More often, I’m stuck watching anime that isn’t quite bad enough to outright drop but not good enough to enjoy watching. I’d rather spend my time blogging about the good stuff but, once a year, I want to focus on the mediocre, the bad, and the terrible anime that I watched in the past year to cleanse the palette and remind myself that not all anime is good.
This section of awards and the worst of countdown is that focus.
If you haven’t read one of my seasonal or year end reviews before, I try to keep spoilers to a minimum but there’ll be some because of how they’ll relate to specific awards. Also, as for the continuing shows, only the part of the series that ran during this year is under consideration for this year’s awards.
Now onto the awards.

Today I had scheduled a post about another moment from anime this year that drew me to tears but I started thinking that those reading my posts are probably getting tired of this. Instead, let’s look at some of the low moments from this year in anime.

The spring season is thankfully almost over. I’m not calling it the worst season in recent memory but I do know I routinely had trouble finding worthy series to fill all 5 spots on my weekly Anime Power Ranking ballot for the first time ever, even with watching more then 20 airing series. The biggest disappointment of the season has been JoJo. I appreciate a manga author taking risks by shifting time periods and main characters and powers like Hirohiko Araki has done with JoJo; however, Japanese Jojo and company (not including grandpa Jojo) are the weakest and blandest cast of the franchise and the bad guy of the week format does not allow any of the villains to really become memorable. I’m only going to continue watching because grandpa Jojo is still around; if something happens to him then I think I’m going to sit JoJo out until the next part gets adapted.
That’s enough dwelling on the past. Let’s turn our attention to the near future with the new season of anime. It looks like a pretty good season of anime.
I don’t mind laughing at myself; so, instead of merely listing all the new series or just the series I’m interested in, I’m going to predict which new anime series will rank in my top 10 of the summer 2014 season and revisit this list when we get to end of the season. I’m going to attempt to get this list right and pat myself on the back for my prognostication skills but I suspect its going to be hilariously wrong.
So, coming in at number 1, the anime I think will be the best new anime of summer is …

Or maybe Space Dandy’s lazy storytelling is the more appropriate title. Either way look at the above screenshot, what’s wrong with this picture?
Even with 8 episodes under it’s belt Space Dandy has been rather sparse with the characterization of it’s main character, Dandy. One point that the show did drill into the viewers about Dandy, however, is that he likes visiting the in-universe Hooter’s knockoff restaurant chain for all the reasons you’d expect him too and that he has made it his life mission to visit every one to bask in the local variations of each restaurant.
So what have we seen in the episodes since?
