Halfway There! Winter 2017 Anime Midseason Report

Winter is so much easier to get through when the weather remains pleasant, like it has around where I live, and the passing of an anime season hurts more when it contains interesting series, like this season does. We’ve reached the middle point of the Winter 2017 season and that means it’s a good time to reflect on the initial promises that this season’s series made, how well they’ve been able to carry out those promises, and what are the chances of a successful ending of these anime. For ease of organization, I’ve covered this season’s anime in a countdown format from weakest to strongest.

The Octave of Anime Christmas – Day 8: Watching Anime with my Mom

For this last day of my look back at 2016 and anime, I have to cover another item that’s not really a moment, but, was important to me.

A year ago, at the start of 2016, my Mom was about halfway through her chemo and it was kicking her down like it was supposed to. She didn’t have much energy, so, I had taken it upon myself to cook dinner for her to make sure she’d get at least one full meal each day. She spent so much of her day on the couch that, while eating, I’d put on a new-to-her show to watch.

We plowed through many shows this way. I’d already gotten her hooked on Doctor Who so we went and watched a good sized chunk of classic Doctor Who. She likes detective shows and has a warm spot for British TV so we watched the original Broadchurch, Rosemary & Thyme, a couple seasons of Father Brown, Whitechapel, and Inspector Lewis.

I started running out of shows to show her.

The Octave of Anime Christmas – Day 4: Saving the Innocents

Only a day or two-ish late  🙂 .

One of my favorite shows of 2016 was Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu (Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-) and it was good enough that I don’t mind writing out it’s full absurdly long title this one time. It was the closest thing to successfully replicate the tone and scope of Steins;Gate since Steins;Gate. And it rode that success all the way to being the second most finished anime series of 2016, according to MAL. So, there’s a good chance many reading this already know which scene I’m going to talk about before I continue. (I could choose something unexpected, so it might be best to continue reading, just in case.)

Having Fun at Anime News Network’s Expense

tghoulAnime News Network (ANN) is an invaluable resource for anime fans and a website I love and visit daily; there are, however, elements to it that could really stand improvement. Sometimes these parts make me want to pull my hair out in frustration and sometimes they make me laugh.

Today was a laughing day.

My Top 20 Anime of All-Time – #10 to #1

The danger of putting together a list like this is the sudden temptation to rewatch the series that one mentions instead of trying to finish writing up said list. A quick look at what I’m watching confirms that I don’t even have the room to fit in Planetes, Haibane Renmei, or Paranoia Agent. To name but three series that I really want to rewatch right now, maybe over the quieter summer season I’ll find the time. (It might be a quiet season but there’s still Moyashimon season 2 to get excited about.)

The Top 12 Anime of 2011 – #6 to #1

Sorry to break the Hidamari Sketch streak but this was my favorite screenshot from 2011.

Did you feel your ears pop just now? I know I did. We’ve finally here – the rarefied air were this year’s best anime titles inhabit.

Before getting to the final countdown here’s some stats that the numerical-minded might find interesting. Using just the top 6 anime series:

  • This year has three anime original series, 2010 saw 2, 2009 had none, 2008 included 2, and 2007 also had 2.
  • This year marks the fourth year that a Shaft series appeared and the third year that KyoAni has appear as well.
  • This year Brain’s Base joins Shaft from 2010, AIC from 2008 and KyoAni from 2007 by placing two anime in the top 6 in one year.
