Nine Years and Counting: The Null Set Keeps Blogging On

A little more than nine years ago – January 21st of 2008 – saw the first piece of writing published on The Null Set, and, thus, began a slipshod experiment that I’m shocked has continued for as long as it has.

I’ve yet to question my desire to continue blogging because, even in this recent time of diminished output, I still feel like that I get more back from my blog than I put into it. One of the reasons for this comes from the feedback I get from people who take the time to leave comments.

So, to my readers and commenters, Thank you! I want 2017 to be a better year for The Null Set than 2016 was.

The Null Set Is Now 8 Years Old

I must be getting old because it does not seem like a year has passed since writing The Null Set’s seventh anniversary post but the calendar says otherwise. To the frequent readers/commenters, the one-timers, and everyone in between – Thank you! I’d like to promise (and deliver) more content and better content but I am who I am and all I can do is try.

I feel a rambling bit of introspection coming on, so, if reading that doesn’t sound appealing to you then this should be the last sentence you read before going – I don’t mind, you won’t hurt my feelings …incidentally, I’ve often wondered if I’d read my blog if someone else wrote it (look at me stretching this sentence out, anyways 🙂 ) – thanks again for visiting.

The Null Set Is Now 7 Years Old

It’s actually been seven years for a couple of days now, the anniversary was this past Wednesday, January 21 and I needed one of those sometimes helpful WordPress notifications to remind me of it. 🙂

To all the frequent readers and occasional readers of The Null Set – I wish you a very big, sincere Thank you!!. To all the people who commented on my posts – I loved and appreciated each comment, even if I was a poor blog owner and took entirely too long to respond or neglected to do so. I’ve also enjoy seeing the “shares” and “likes” because that means, even if the person didn’t leave a comment, the post was good enough to elicit a response. I can’t promise the upcoming year will be a better year here for The Null Set but I want it to be.

Leveling Up The Null Set to Celebrate It’s Sixth Anniversary

alpha_jumpIt’s time to fess up on something – I hated reading my own blog. This vexing feeling started off as a vague, insidious whisper that I couldn’t shake and it only strengthened over time. Upon examination and reflection, I was able to sum up the problem as The Null Set was “taxing” to read. Puzzled, because I had picked a theme that steered clear of tiny 8 pt. and 10 pt. fonts as well as poor color choices like grey text on a black background, I finally decided it was probably a fault of my writing. Not a particularly uplifting thought and a less stubborn or optimistic me probably would have decided it was time to stop blogging, if only to ease the suffering of those who continue coming back.

The Null Set is 5 Years Old – That’s Like 35 Years in Dog Years

Only a few hours late this year! 🙂

Five years ago, on January 21, 2008, I started The Null Set with the idea to cover anime and print science fiction so that fans of one would try the other and hopefully expand both fandoms. I pretty much failed at that but I did find many things to keep me blogging.

It turned out I really like the feeling from realizing there are actual people out there willing to read what I write and spend the time to comment back. (Unless, of course, my brain is in a box somewhere connected to computer network and I’ve been writing to a bunch computer sub-routines designed to fool me into thinking I’m alive.) I even somewhat like the feeling having to clean up spam comments because that means by some measure The Null Set is worth spamming.

I also became a better and deeper anime viewer. After starting The Null Set, I needed to start asking “why” when I would watch anime so that I’d have something to say; it wasn’t enough to just say I liked or disliked a certain anime. I needed reasons. I, also, pushed myself to try a wider variety of anime shows because I felt, and continue to feel, that the more rounded and complete I was in my viewing habits, the more truthful and correct I would be in what I wrote. Of course, personal biases and the like will play into whatever I write but, at least, if I say show X has the best action of the year there won’t be readers frothing at the mouth because shows A,B, C, D all had better action but I didn’t watch A, B, C, or D.

(Speaking of best action, I’m working on my Best of 2012, hoping I’ll be able to see the end of a couple shows before I finish my look back, and I can say with full certainty that anyone who picked either Fate/Zero or Sword Art Online for best action of the year is flat out wrong. Next year, watch more anime series and don’t let how pretty the backgrounds look confuse you.)

There’s other reasons to keep me blogging but I’m starting to ramble now. Suffice it to say that I see myself continuing to blog about anime (and the occasional SF piece) for the foreseeable future because anime still has the power to move me, entertain me, wow me, and make me think. As long as that remains true, I’ll be here. It helps that I’ve never promised a certain post rate. (Which seems to have chased some very good veteran bloggers out of anime blogging much to my dismay.)

This year was a pretty good year for The Null Set.

I did better then I thought I would in the Second Aniblog Tournament by making it into the top 32 before losing to a very strong opponent. I also participated in the Secret Santa Project that Reverse Thieves runs for a second year. I’ve also started to vote in kevo’s Weekly Anime Power Rankings done at Desu ex Machina. Also new this year was my participation in the 12 Days of Christmas Project and the Fantasy Anime League on MyAnimeList. After realizing how badly I picked my team, I’m happy that I finished 94th out of 199. I also just came off my busiest month since February 2009 and I hope this signals an upswing in posting by me.

Before I get to the boring part, I want to say a big THANK YOU! to everyone that reads The Null Set.

The Null Set Is 4 Years Old Today

After almost 2 years of kicking around the idea of starting an anime blog I decided four years ago today to see if I could write an anime blog and keep up with it. I guess the answer was – yes I could. (With the caveat that my writing style never developed into something that I liked and I haven’t been posting as much as I’d like to 🙂 .)

Looking over my previous anniversary posts I noticed that they get shorter each year and this trend will probably continue this year though I might start showing my age by reminiscing about the good old days …

… Thinking back, it was a strange decision to make about starting a blog. I was always more math/science attuned and find organizing my thoughts into something coherent on paper a very difficult task. For example, that comment I left in the previous post took me almost two hours to write. Also, during the anime season that I started blogging, Winter 2008, I was feeling burned out over anime and was only watching one series. Why this was a good time to start blogging about anime is beyond me now. …

Sorry about that; reaching four years isn’t even that old compared to many blogs out there. 🙂

Before I lose anymore eyeballs to my meandering thoughts, I want to wholeheartedly thank the people who continue to read and comment on my little blog.
