Surprise!

It feels like an age has passed since I’ve last written something here to justify the “and anime with a little written SF thrown in blogger” part of the mental description I have for myself. Actually, it has been an Age since I last wrote here – meaning – just a few months ago, in September, was a time when Hillary was going to be the next President and now we’re living in a decidedly different future age. And just think, 2017 could turn out to be even more absurd than 2016. Thank goodness there will be Natsume Yuujinchou season 6 to turn to when 2017 gets too crazy.

The 12 Days of Anime Christmas – Day 11: Traditional Anime Animators Telling 3D CG to Stuff It

The episode of Shirobako that dealt with using either traditional hand drawn animation or 3D CG for a scene in the fictional anime series being created crystallized an observation that I’ve subconsciously been making about this year. I think Japanese animators as a collective group are slowly getting nudged away from the widely held (and correct) idea that CG and anime don’t mix because CG is too limited and can’t replace hand drawn animation. This freaks many people out, especially a good number of traditional animators.

The response by these animators, I think, has been to push themselves to improve themselves and the animation they draw to remind us of the strengths of hand drawn animation.

The 12 Days of Anime Christmas – Day 3: Getting Buzzed on Anime Redux

Last year for the 12 Days of Anime Christmas I talked about how thirsty I had gotten for real knock-down drop dead gorgeous animation and how when Little Witch Academia premiered it’s animation left me feeling slightly buzzed, pleasantly elated, and silly happy.

I wasn’t expecting to have that type of reaction from anime again but a year later and here we are again. This time the culprit is episode 3 of the OVA Yozakura Quartet – Tsuki ni Naku – more specifically, the fight between the two werewolves.
