The Anime Recap Episode – # 1: June 2017

“It lives and it’s starting a new monthly feature?! Impossible! I thought this blog had already died or given a wedgie and stuffed inside a locker at a magical high school or something,” is what I imagine is being thought by whoever is reading this right now. I know it’s what I’m thinking. As for an explanation of the mundane minutiae to where I’ve been, I’ll stick that at the end of this article; instead, let’s jump into what I hope to accomplish with new feature of The Null Set.

Over the last decade my anime viewing habits have slowly drifted away from the slavish week-to-week new episode watching pattern that provided the material needed to write a weekly recap article. Currently, the really good shows still get watched as soon as possible and the rest have shifted to an irregular pattern of filling in the time when I feel like watching some anime. That means some shows get 3 or 4 episodes piled up before I get to them now.

In hindsight, I should have switched to a monthly recap format but that obvious conclusion eluded me for the last several years.

So, what can one expect to find inside The Anime Recap Episode?

While I’m not going to cover everything I watched, I want each post to do a good job capturing the good and the bad of what anime I did watch – new and old – from the past month. I’m going to try to steer clear of writing here in formats that I already write in elsewhere: first impressions, mid-season report, season and series review. After all, I want these recap episodes to contain new content and not merely repeat already written material. If that leaves me with enough to write about is something we’ll have to see. I want to also cover what I’m looking forward to in the next month and then cover how my last month’s anticipated anime turned out. There’ll be other bits included, I’m sure, as the inspiration hits.

And with that navel grazing done, let’s get on with it.

The Octave of Anime Christmas – Day 2: The Proto-Shounen Hero

At one point, if asked, I would have said that I wasn’t much of a shounen fan (the action series type that tend to get long anime adaptations).

I didn’t get into anime until I was well past the targeted age group, and, of the major long-running shounen anime series the only one I liked was Bleach and only until I realized the author had no clue how to tell a good story. Obviously, there were shounen series I liked but I figured they were the aberrations. Then Hunter x Hunter came along and provided a most compelling argument as to why I was wrong about shounen series (as well as the perceived weakness of longer series).

Though my feelings towards shounen series thawed, Hunter x Hunter provided an unreachable mark that no shounen series could approach, much less, equal or best. Actually, I’m not sure if I’ll ever see another anime, of any genre or demographic, that will raise the bar any higher than Hunter x Hunter, but, 2016 finally saw the conclusion of a shounen series that is a true worthy shounen follow-up to Hunter x Hunter. That show is Ushio and Tora.

The Top 15 Anime of 2015

I feel that I’m somewhat late getting here but I have beaten the APR Top Anime of 2015 list so I can’t say that I’m late. 🙂 I’ll repeat what I said last year because it still holds: 2015 was a good year for anime. It’ll take several years to see how things settle out before one is able to compare it to earlier years but I think it’ll rank just fine in comparison.

I didn’t feel like splitting the countdown into two or three parts like I normally do, so, this post runs a bit long but it’s all here in one post.

Early Season Impressions: Spring 2015 – Seven Layer Cookies

Seven layer cookies, aka Magic Bars, are traditionally made up of seven ingredients that are laid down one at time into a cooking pan before being baked. The result is not a cookie with seven layers, but, if properly done, a cookie that has melded together into a very delicious treat. A good season of anime offers up many different types of shows that, when combined, sort of melt together and provide a satisfying experience to the viewer.

With the remaining series I’ve yet to cover, I thought I’d try to build a seven layer cookie of anime series and hope it would blend together into a first-rate treat. Of course, this wouldn’t be the best seven layer cookie that could be made with this season’s series because I’ve already covered many fine ingredients in earlier posts; but, I think there’s still plenty of noteworthy series left to choose from.

So let’s move to the first ingredient.

Spring 2015 Anime Preview and Predicting The Top Anime of the Next Season

The Spring 2015 anime season is just around the bend and there’s a ton of new series on the way to hopefully fill the holes in our hearts left from all the great winter series.

Instead of a dry listing of all the various anime series that will be coming out, I’m going to take a stab at guessing which series will be the top anime series of season. Last summer I did a preview like this and it was funny to see what I got right and what I didn’t. I failed to include Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun, Futsuu no Joshikousei ga [Locodol] Yatte Mita, Ao Haru Ride, and Sabagebu! on my countdown. I also had Sailor Moon: Crystal picked to be my #6 anime and Glasslip as my #9.

So, I guess the takeaway is that the following list will probably be wrong, hilariously so, but that’s okay. I’ll laugh at myself later as well. And to lead this countdown off is …
