The Octave of Anime Christmas – Day 8: Watching Anime with my Mom

For this last day of my look back at 2016 and anime, I have to cover another item that’s not really a moment, but, was important to me.

A year ago, at the start of 2016, my Mom was about halfway through her chemo and it was kicking her down like it was supposed to. She didn’t have much energy, so, I had taken it upon myself to cook dinner for her to make sure she’d get at least one full meal each day. She spent so much of her day on the couch that, while eating, I’d put on a new-to-her show to watch.

We plowed through many shows this way. I’d already gotten her hooked on Doctor Who so we went and watched a good sized chunk of classic Doctor Who. She likes detective shows and has a warm spot for British TV so we watched the original Broadchurch, Rosemary & Thyme, a couple seasons of Father Brown, Whitechapel, and Inspector Lewis.

I started running out of shows to show her.

Is It Okay to Judge an Anime Based on How Well It’s Used in AMVs?

In working towards completing a huge project for this site I have first been working on a separate, related, project – an updating and expansion of my grading system. This new system, in my mind, would be a useful tool in completing the huge project and is something I should be able to complete. After all, I have watched nearly 700 anime TV series and have been thinking about how to grade anime shows for over 8 years now.

While letting my mind free range on the topic of what parameters to use in grading an anime I noticed that during my recent renewed interest in anime AMVs that certain anime shows seem to be fertile ground for AMV editors to turn into great AMVs and other shows seem to lack the ability to be turned into great AMVs.

The Top 15 Anime of 2015

I feel that I’m somewhat late getting here but I have beaten the APR Top Anime of 2015 list so I can’t say that I’m late. 🙂 I’ll repeat what I said last year because it still holds: 2015 was a good year for anime. It’ll take several years to see how things settle out before one is able to compare it to earlier years but I think it’ll rank just fine in comparison.

I didn’t feel like splitting the countdown into two or three parts like I normally do, so, this post runs a bit long but it’s all here in one post.

The Best Anime Of 2015 – Part 2: Genre and General Story Awards

Characters, even the most excellent, need something to happen around them to give them an opportunity to be excellent. So, as we build towards the countdown of the best anime of the year, we next turn our focus to those anime that excelled in a genre format and/or general story way – Most Entertaining or Best Drama, for instance.

The Best Anime Of 2015 – Part 1: Cast and Character Awards

I do not write stories or create TV series. (I sometimes think I could become a SF writer and among the ideas I’ve had is one for a story that mirrors the recently airing Erased almost exactly except, instead of trying to stop a murder, the main character has to stop 9/11 from happening.) However, I imagine most anime series start out with characters and are fleshed out from there which is why I start here with these awards.
