To be honest I had an entirely different plan for today’s moment but that got thrown out the window as I watched the final episode of (what will hopefully be the first season of) One Punch Man today.
It pretty much left me a pile of jelly goo from awesomeness overload. It’s been several hours now and my brain is starting to think coherent thoughts again and my bones have reasserted their dominance over my physical form. My equilibrium still feels off, so please bear with me.
That I include this final episode of One Punch Man is beyond question, but, the question to me was how. I still stand by my statement that the previously talked about scene from Hibike! Euphonium is the best animated television scene from 2015 so I can’t just call out the animation.
As I turned the episode over in my mind I realized there was a deeper achievement this episode reached beyond merely astounding me with animation. I’ve slowly been adding onto my expectations of this final episode of One Punch Man as the weeks have gone by which adds to my worrying that I was going to disappoint myself. I held onto this worry as the final fight played out and it was only at the end of it when I could let it go.
So, it’s that moment, as Lord Boros is defeated and moments away from dying and he realizes that Saitama was being magnanimous in this fight by pulling his punches a bit so that Lord Boros could have his enjoyable fight, that I’m picking for today because it convinced me that although I heaped undue expectations on this show for it’s final episode – it, more than any series this year, could still surpass them.
And now, here’s a bunch of screenshots from that fight. I took 89 of them but here’s some of my favorites.
And so ends my 650th post for The Null Set. I can’t think of a better topic for something milestone-ish like 650 posts. Sorry for the screenshot spamming but Sakugabooru seems like it couldn’t handle OPM and had a melt down, so, I couldn’t include any animated clips. I did find a couple clips posted on twitter and those are below; I might need to revisit this post later when Sakugabooru is back.
