Anime Quiz 7 Answers

Merry Christmas in February!

Long time readers might remember that I’ve mentioned this family-created holiday in the past. For those that don’t know what Christmas in February is, it started over 15 years ago. My family makes too many Christmas cookies and some are always left over after New Years Day. They’d go to the freezer until Christmas cookies sounded good again – February – and we’d pair the cookies with a nice meal (a spare turkey bought super cheap at Thanksgiving or a spare ham/rack of ribs bought cheap for Christmas or New Years Day). It was a very short leap before we started to call this meal Christmas in February and for several years that’s as far as it went. Then a couple decorations were put up, most often bought in the after Christmas clearances and hadn’t been put away yet. Then a few years later we put up a cute little foot high Christmas tree and then we started buying a small gift for everyone and then some of the outdoor Christmas lights are left up and then a bigger Christmas tree was bought on clearance from Wal-mart and suddenly my family spends all of January looking forward to Christmas in February

And it’s not hard to see why. Christmas in February has most of the best parts of Christmas without the pressure and hassle of the real holiday and because we can pick the day to celebrate it, it’s even convenient for everyone as well.

This year the original plan was for me to write a two table continuation of my Christmas Dungeons and Dragons module and I spent all this week getting it ready but last minute cancellations due to the impending winter storm shelved the continuation for now. (Instead, the family and friends that are coming will play Werewolf, Apples to Apples, Cranium or something similar.)

So, Merry Christmas in February everyone! Tomorrow, I’m going to feast on Fried Chicken and quite possibly the best tasting homemade Kolbasa I’ve ever had, homemade Mac’n’cheese, fried Cubed Potatoes (seasoned with onion soup mix and season salt), and all the Christmas cookies I can eat🙂 .

And here’s the answers to this week’s anime quiz.

Question 1: Name the anime that features these three characters – Lina Inverse, Gourry Gabriev, Amelia.

  • The answer is Slayers or one of it’s sequels.

Question 2: Name the anime that features these three characters – Rukia Kuchiki, Ichigo Kurosaki, Uryuu Ishida.

  • The answer is Bleach.

anime_quiz_07_screenshot01Question 3: Name the animated series that is being referenced in this screenshot.

  • The animated series referenced is the anime Astroboy. These five screenshots all come from Shaft’s Bakemonogatari franchise and I’m sure these just scratch the surface of the call-outs to be found because these were just the first five that came to my mind.

anime_quiz_07_screenshot02Question 4: Name the animated series that is being referenced in this screenshot.

  • The animated work (should not have used the word “series”) referenced is the anime Akira. Still considered a classic of anime, at one time it was pushed as one of those shows that everyone who calls themselves an anime fan must watch and I, dutifully, as a new anime fan bought, watched, and was disappointed how it did not live up to it’s billing. This was right after I bought Neon Genesis Evangelion on DVD and was likewise disappointed by it. And this 1-2 punch forever made me weary of “expert” opinion on anime and buying an anime without first seeing it.

anime_quiz_07_screenshot03Question 5: Name the animated series that is being referenced in this screenshot.

  • The animated series referenced is the anime Detective Conan.

anime_quiz_07_screenshot04Question 6: Name the animated series that is being referenced in this screenshot.

  • The animated series referenced is the anime Full Metal Alchemist or FMA:Brotherhood. This is but one time that FMA has been referenced in a Shaft work which makes me wonder who at Shaft enjoys the series so much.

anime_quiz_07_screenshot05Question 7: Name the animated series that is being referenced in this screenshot.

  • The animated series referenced here is not an anime but I thought it would be well-known enough that it would be okay; the answer is the American animated series Powerpuff Girls. Made during what has to be known as Cartoon Network’s Golden Age, this 1990’s animated series along with Johnny Bravo, Dexter’s Laboratory, and a few others helped keep me interested in animation until I stumbled upon anime during my college years.

screenshot06Question 8: Name the special camera lens that is being mimicked in this screenshot.

  • The special camera lens being mimicked in this screenshot from Koufuku Graffiti is known as a fisheye lens. Ever looking for a way to stretch a small animation budget Shaft frequently uses this style and many more in an attempt to get the viewer to forget they don’t get the time or money to wow us with raw animation power.

Refer to the following picture for questions 9 – 12.

anime_quiz_07_01Question 9: Which of these characters are voiced by the seiyuu Hiroshi Kamiya?

  • The answer is B. Hiroshi Kamiya voices Izaya Orihara from the currently airing anime series Durarara!!x2. The four seiyuu here were used in prior quizzes so this intended to build upon prior learning.

Question 10: Which of these characters are voiced by the seiyuu Megumi Han?

  • The answer is D. Megumi Han voices Freesia or Friesia from the currently airing anime series Nanatsu no Taizai. I’m really loving the new opening song that Nanatsu no Taizai is using this cour; it’s from the same people who did the Database OP for Log Horizon.

Question 11: Which of these characters are voiced by the seiyuu Daisuke Ono?

  • The answer is A. Daisuke Ono voices Shizuo Heiwajima from the currently airing anime series Durarara!!x2.

Question 12: Which of these characters are voiced by the seiyuu Rie Kugimiya?

  • The answer is C. Rie Kugimiya voices Suzuya Juuzou from the currently airing anime series Tokyo Ghoul √A. I’ve been trying to put my finger on what exactly I’ve been disappointed with about Tokyo Ghoul and recently I finally figured out what it is – the story really needed to emulate Parasyte’s story. I’m not saying it should copy it but the set-up on each series is similar and what Parasyte chooses to focus on and emphasize has been the much more interesting and compelling series to follow.

anime_quiz_07_02Question 13: Name the Japanese seiyuu that voiced these four characters.

  • The answer is Katsuyuki Konishi. The four roles, from left to right, are Kenji Kazama from D-Frag!, Kamina Tengen from Toppa Gurren Lagann, Toraji Ishida from Bamboo Blade, and America from Hetalia Axis Powers. I’ve always liked the mental image of Kamina being the representation of America on Hetalia.

Question 14: The song “Tsuki no Mayu” is the ending song to which anime?

  • Composed by Yoko Kanno, the song  “Tsuki no Mayu” is the ending song to the 1999 anime series Turn A Gundam. This is another song that I never heard of prior to the Animusic Tournament but was completely drawn in to once I heard it.

Question 15: The song “Gun’s & Roses” is the opening song to which anime?

  • The song “Gun’s & Roses” is the opening song to the 2007 anime series Baccano!. Am I the only person who’s hoping that a successful run of the new Durarara series will eventually lead to more Baccano!?

To tally results:

  1. Merry Christmas in February! What a nice family occasion!🙂

Oh, you mean you’re not a fan of Evangelion, too? I’m not too fond of it myself. Ah, in general, my taste is not at par with that of anime ‘experts’.

Now that you mention it, Shinobu does look like a Powerpuff Girl.😄 I used to watch it when I was young, and it was one of my childhood American cartoons.

  2. *Headdesk* I used to watch Powerpuff Girls all the time, so the answer’s obvious now that you say it. Too focused on looking for answers from the anime world, I guess.

And lovely… had 50/50 shots on 9-11 and 10-12 and got both pairs backwards. Well I suppose it’s fair, since I didn’t actually know them anyway.

More Baccano would always be a good thing….
