This quiz is the Wednesday of my planned run of anime quizzes. Yes, it’s the hump-quiz, if you will, since six quizzes have come and gone and there’s six more quizzes to do this season. I tried a couple new things on this quiz which hopefully turn out well. Any problems one has for this quiz can be blamed on my picking up of a nearly 400 page book – The Martian by Andy Weir – on Saturday and finishing it within 24 hours, leaving little time for all the things I’m supposed to be working on right now. 🙂

Speaking of Guns N Roses, have you ever seen the early 90’s OVA of Bastard? It’s a dark fantasy series and the mangaka was a big fan of western heavy metal, so almost all the characters and spells have named derived from metal bands and performers. One of the spells was called “Guns-N-Ro,” which is why I thought of it just now. It’s cheesy as hell, but pretty funny too.

@miharusshi: Sorry, I probably should have made it more explicitly clear that at least one of the references was to an American cartoon but I thought Powerpuff Girls was big enough that I wouldn’t need too.
Yes, this quiz did turn out different. Scrolling through my folders of screenshots that I took over the year for my 2014 best of posts gave me a few new ideas.
@Jim D.: No I have not. I’m very weak about anime from before say 1998. I’d actually like to find an anime blog that focuses on the 90’s and earlier because I don’t know what’s worth watching.
Sounds like I should try to track that down and watch it. Right now I’m watching classic Doctor Who and the special effects are so very cheesy and the show is a lot more comedic then the new series but it’s so loveable.

All’s cool. I actually liked that you used this new set of questions for this quiz! 🙂 And yes, I enjoy looking at anime being referenced in another anime, especially if I do know what anime is being referenced. (It would just fly over my head otherwise, right? Where’s the fun in that?)

Hmm, well I’ve been tossing around the idea of starting my own blog at some point. Might be a regular feature to consider if I ever do.
And just to warn you in case you ever do pick it up, Bastard is pretty violent. Not to Elfen Lied extremes, but it isn’t afraid to spill plenty of blood. I’d say more on the level of something like Kara no Kyoukai or Ninja Scroll. And stick to subs if you can – it’s the much better and funnier version.

@Jim D.: I tossed around the idea of writing a blog for about 2 years before a long boring stretch in January finally made me pull the trigger and actually start one.
On one hand I’d say don’t over-think it and just give it a try but on the other hand I’d suggest before doing so think first about the intended audience and purpose. For me, I decided I wanted to focus on getting more people to watch more anime, specifically anime they might not necessarily try otherwise and so I try to keep spoilers to a minimum and focus on posts – like my year’s best – that hopefully accomplish that. It also helps to come up with a unique twist or focus especially if, like me, you think your writing isn’t innately interesting to read. (Some people are such interesting writers that their writing is the draw and it doesn’t particularly matter what they write about. I am not one of those writers and I’m okay with that.) I also believe that, while regular posting is the best way to run a blog, as long as people aren’t paying for it the blogger is not under a requirement to write a certain number of posts a week or month – write when you have the feeling to do so and don’t push it when you don’t.
I would definitely read such a column, if you ever decide to start a blog though I’d probably just lurk and never post a reply 🙂 .
I’m American, violence doesn’t bother me much 🙂 . All kidding aside, I do dislike gratuitous violence in what I watch but even that is not an automatic no-go for me.
It would probably be awhile before I’d get to Bastard anyways, I have a few shows like Legend of the Galactic Heroes that I’m trying to find time to get to first but when I do I’ll definitely mention it on my blog somewhere.
