Anime Quiz 3 Answers

It’s been interesting reading the reactions to Death Parade’s first two episodes. There’s one camp that disliked how the second episode “explained” the first episode and another camp who thinks the second episode enhanced the first because it introduced several ideas and nuances that deepened the events of the first episode and increased the complexity of the show. Put me in the second camp. As much as I loved the first episode, the second episode showed that this series is gunning to be the next great Madhouse series. I’m not convinced that there’s still not plenty of secrets that Death Parade is hiding from us the viewers.

In other news, here the answers to this week’s anime quiz.

Question 1: Name the anime that features these three characters – Tohru Honda, Shigure Sohma, Kyo Sohma.

  • The answer is Fruits Basket, which I happened to catch many years ago on the short lived Funimation block that some channel in the 9000’s that Dish Network carried.

Question 2: Name the anime that features these three characters – Hajime Saitou, Kaoru Kamiya, Megumi Takani.

  • The answer is the Rurouni Kenshin TV series, my gateway anime that didn’t hold up nearly as well as I’d hoped when I rewatched it a couple years ago

Question 3: Counting only TV series, no OVAs or movies etc., place these six series in order from oldest to youngest. For series that were rebooted, use the first series that reached 100 episodes.

  • The correct order is E, F, C, A, B, D. The first, E, is the Dragon Ball franchise which started February 1986. Next, F, is Yu Yu Hakusho which started October 1992. Naruto, C, is next at October 2002 then Bleach, A, in October 2004. B, Gintama, is next and started April 2006 and lastly is D, Hunter x Hunter, which started October 2011. The continuity for some of these shounen series can be confusing so for these questions I stuck with only TV series and only one iteration of each series and I used episode count to be the determining factor. The first Hunter x Hunter TV series, which ran in 1999, only went 62 episodes.

Question 4: Three of these series were/are animated by one animation studio, which studio and which anime.

  • The answer is Studio Pierrot who animated A – Bleach, C – Naruto, and F – Yu Yu Hakusho. Bleach was my gateway to anime fansubbing. Being a fan of the manga I was surprised to learn of the existence of the anime from references to it in the manga and couldn’t understand why one was brought over and not the other.

Question 5: Using the series from question 3 as a starting point, which of these franchises has had the most episodes made? Count further sequel series but not spin-offs or rebooted series.

  • The answer is C – Naruto who between the first series and it’s sequel have aired more then 600 episodes. It’s closest competition was Dragon Ball with a touch over 500 episodes spread out over three series stretching from the mid 80’s to the mid 90’s.

anime_quiz_03_02Question 6: These four series share an organizational connection. What is it?

  • Maybe I was a bit to obtuse with this question. The answer is that these four franchises featured sequels that were animated by a different animation company than who animated the original series. A – Hayate the Combat Butler has been passed from SynergySP to JC Staff to Manglobe. B – Durarara was originally animated by Brain’s Base and it’s sequels are going to be animated by the new start-up Shuka. C – Log Horizon went from Satelight to Studio Deen. And lastly, D – Full Metal Panic was first animated by Gonzo only to moved to Kyoto Animation for the next two seasons.

anime_quiz_03_03Question 7: These four series share a personal connection. What is it?

  • These four series all share having Taku Iwasaki composing the music for them. Also doing the music to Gurren Lagann, he’s one of the few composers in anime that I can almost always pick his work out. The four series were A – Witch Hunter Robin, B – Noragami, C – Gatchaman Crowds, and D – Ben-to.

Question 8: The song “Tori no Uta” is the opening song to which anime?

  • Tori no Uta”  was the opening to Air, 2005’s Key-Kyoto Animation series that helped put KyoAni on the path to fame.

Question 9: The song “Ride on Shooting Star” is the ending song to which anime?

  • Ride on Shooting Star” was the ending song to FLCL which is now almost 15 years old and still looks like it’s a recent anime.

  1. Hmm… I thought that DBZ should have more episodes, but not surprised to see Naruto.

Taku Iwasaki is one of my favorite composers! 😀 I love his strings the most, and his wide variety of compositions is amazing!

  2. Rurouni Kenshin’s anime has some good stuff, but it’s also guilty of way too much filler. I read the entire manga long before I saw any of the anime, and I was amazed to see filler already popping up only a dozen episodes into the first season. The manga, OTOH, is as good as ever. I re-read the whole thing about a year ago. And the Trust & Betrayal OVA might still be the finest two hours of anime I’ve ever watched.

My gateway series was The Vision of Escaflowne, which I own and (fortunately) still enjoy to this day.

  3. @Kitsune: Taku Iwasaki alone is not enough that I’ll watch an anime but those two tracks leave me intrigued.

@miharusshi: I still like it’s sense of style and design and several of the OP/ED but the filler in the anime nearly killed my enthusiasm for the series and after the third or so time the story became about saving a kidnapped and/or helpless girl I was done. There were better things to spend time on then a series that seemed to solely alternate between training and saving a girl.

@Jim D: After being disappointed by my Kenshin rewatch I was glad at least to see that the Trust & Betrayal OVA was still a really good OVA.

I don’t like keeping a “backlog” but The Vision of Escaflowne is on my informal, if I get bored, list of series I’d like to get too.
